About me
My name is Hanne Eggen Røislien
I hold a PhD in religion and culture, with a focus on military culture and how culture shapes soldiers and military performance. Over the past three decades I have advised military leadership and defence organisations, worked with the UN, and logged years of experience in war and conflict zones, primarily across the Middle East. I have built a career at the intersection of rigorous research and operational reality.
I am an author, a keynote speaker, and a regular expert commentator in press and media on war, culture, and human behaviour.
That is the foundation. What I bring to you is not theory. It is hard-won knowledge from the places where culture is a matter of life and death.
What I have learned is this: culture is not a value statement. It is what you are left with when everything else falls away.
Culture is not a feel-good initiative. War does not offer lessons we would have chosen. But it forces the questions we can no longer avoid:
What do we actually believe in, and who are we when it gets hard?
Those questions belong not just to the military. They belong to every leader and every organisation navigating a world that is harder and more uncertain than we planned for.
War is honest in a way peacetime rarely is. Speechless exists to make that honesty useful.
